Newly Released: A Comic Book Look at the Season

Written by Robert Sutherland

This isn't your typical season review...

Cover

Season reviews can, in many cases, be bland affairs. Word after word explaining the ups and downs of a season that many of us will have already seen. Video reviews work well - but often struggle to convey the context of what happened. And this is where Phil Morgan's creation - a comic book-style review of the season - fills the void.

Page after page, it tells the story of some of Palace's early ups and late downs. It tells the story of one of the most conflicting seasons in the club's recent history.

Morgan has produced a review of the season that takes supporters from the high of fifth place and dreams of a European adventure to the low of limping across the finish line. From the bliss of FA Cup wins over Southampton, Tottenham and Watford to the gut-wrenching defeat in the Cup Final.

What Phil manages to do so well with his book is provide a representation of the season in a way that offers visual cues capable of reigniting those memories as if they happened just yesterday.

While the season wasn't one we want to remember in its entirety, there are plenty individual moments that make the book a worthwhile purchase.

The book is available from the Crystal Palace Club Shop as well as from Phil Morgan directly. Tweet him at www.twitter.com/pnm1979

Yohan Cabaye insists he does not regret moving to Crystal Palace

Written by FYP Fanzine

Yohan Cabaye was France's Man of the Match in their final group game against Switzerland, which ended in a 0-0 draw.

The Palace star won nine tackles in midfield, more than any other player has won in a single game at Euro 2016 so far.

BBC pundit Thierry Henry heapd praise on the Eagles midfielder, who was given his first chance to shine during the tournament thanks to Didier Deschamps mixing things up with Les Bleus already qualified for the knockout stages.

And Cabaye's super performance comes during the week he confirmed he is loving life at SE25.

Asked whether he regrets choosing Palace last summer given how badly league form tailed off in 2016 he replied: “Despite the poor second half of the season, we had an excellent first half. On December 19, we were fifth (finished at 15th). I have never regretted any choice of my career."

Cabaye revealed that it was in fact Deschamps who influenced his move to Selhurst Park from Paris St Germain.

He added to L'Equipe:

“In fact, when negotiations had advanced, I was in Clairefontaine. The France coach then came on to the subject and I told him. I quoted him the interested clubs and I asked him what he thought.

“He said.. “Yo, the most important thing for you is to find rhythm, especially in terms of your playing time”.

“That’s why I selected Palace, it’s also because I know the coach very well (Alan Pardew) and I love the Premier League."

We're delighted he joined and look forward to seeing him play next season although if he keeps playing like this for France this summer we might start getting a bit worried about big clubs starting to take notice!

Crystal Palace Premier League fixtures 2016/17 are released

Written by FYP Fanzine

Crystal Palace's fixtures for the new Premier League season have been released.

The Eagles kick off their record fourth consecutive Premier League campaign at home to West Brom with former boss Tony Pulis bringing his Baggies to SE25.

Boxing Day sees Palace play Watford away with a trip to Arsenal five days later and Swansea visiting on January 2nd, the first game of 2017.

And Alan Pardew's men will probably need to start the season as strongly as they did in 2015/16 because the fixture computer has not been particularly kind to Palace in April and May.

The final five away games of the season are Chelsea, Southampton, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United although Palace did win two of those last season.

And remember 2013/14 when we all thought similar as Palace had Everton, West Ham, Manchester City and Liverpool and they got two wins and a draw from that run, securing safety in the process.

Check out the full fitxture list for 2016/17 below.

Andy Johnson rolls back the years to score last minute winner for Palace fans against Brighton in charity match

Written by FYP Fanzine

Andy Johnson scord an 87th minute winner for Palace fans down at the Amex Stadium against Brighton supporters in an annual charity match.

It was AJ's first game since he appeared for the Eagles first team in 2014 against Newcastle and he capped it with two goals, the second being a late winner.

Palace fans, who also had former Selhurst favourite Shaun Derry playing for them, found themselves 2-0 down at half-time but rallied to come back and win with three second half goals.

The charity match is the centrepiece of the Robert Eaton Memorial Fund; a charity set up to support disadvantaged children in America, Sussex, Africa and Croydon.

Each year Palace and Brighton supporters meet to play a 90 minute game and this year's clash was at the Seagulls' Amex home; with the Eagles spoiling the day with a classic upset.

Brighton had gone 2-0 up in the first half with two well-taken goals. FYP's very own Jim Daly and Travis Endeacott both starting the game; JD having a tough time indeed at right-back against a pacy left winger.

But Derry's empahtic half-time teamtalk did the trick and Palace responded after the break with three well-taken goals; first from Jake Newton to reduce the deficit and then two from AJ.

The first was a penalty after Ryan Scott had done well to win a spot kick. The second was classic AJ; rounding the keeper cooly before slotting home after being fed by Derry.

His classic hamburger celebration came out as the Palace players and fans enjoyed yet another win over Brighton.

The night was a big success for the fund off the pitch, raising £20,000 with a record attendance. Palace owe much thanks to Ben Long who managed and organised their team as well as all those who came along on the night to support the charity.

FYP will also be auctioning off signed shirts and boots from AJ and Derry, keep an eye out on our Twitter page FYPFanzine for more info.

Crystal Palace Transfer Tracker - 14/06/2016

Written by Matt Webb

It's the summer! And despite Euro 2016 distracting us all, the transfer rumour mill still churning out Palace links. Here's Matt Webb with a summary.

Crystal Palace’s third successive season in the Premier League is now complete and despite their most impressive first half to a season in decades, Palace fans will be breathing a sigh of relief that relegation was thankfully avoided.  As we sit back with our jug of Pimms, enduring the inevitable disappointment of an International tournament we have the chance to reflect on what caused the sudden downturn in Palace’s Premier League form.

Some notable injuries to our star players took a toll on performances as it became increasingly obvious that although Palace could boast a very strong first eleven, the quality in the squad beyond the starting players was incredibly threadbare.

FFP regulations, coupled with some frivolous and naive spending by Ian Holloway during Palace’s first campaign back in the Premier League in 2013 have previously hindered the board’s ability to add quality players.  Time has enabled Palace to correct those mistakes and this June the club released no less than 15 players from their contracts.

Following the release of so many players and the much talked about increase in TV revenue, this summer’s transfer window offers Palace a real chance to add some much needed strength in depth to what is now a very thin squad.  Let’s take a look at some of the names that have been linked with a move to SE25:

Asmir Begović – Chelsea – GK

David Gregory and Chris Kettings were two of the players released from the club this summer, and with Pardew seemingly not confident in any of Wayne Hennessey, Alex McCarthy or Julian Speroni - it appears very likely that securing the contract of a top class goal keeper will be a priority before next season begins.

Begović is a goalkeeper of the highest calibre and would represent something of a coup for Palace if the club were able to sign him.  Having caught the eye of Jose Mourinho following some impressive displays with Stoke City, the Portuguese coach took Begović to Chelsea as understudy to Thibaut Courtois.  Now that Mourinho has moved on to Manchester United, it is unlikely that Begović will be happy to warm the bench at Stamford Bridge for another season and so with first team football a guarantee at Palace there is a chance that Alan Pardew could get his man

Tim Krul – Newcastle United – GK

Following the relegation of Pardew’s previous employer Newcastle United, many have suggested that the Palace boss may raid his former club for some of their higher earners.

Pardew has long admired the Newcastle shot stopper and with only one year remaining on the Dutch international’s contract it seems likely that Newcastle would be willing to cash in on Krul rather than watch him leave for free in 12 month’s time.  Krul is an experienced goalkeeper with over 160 Premier League appearances under his belt, and while he may not be quite the same standard as Begović, he would certainly represent an upgrade on Wayne Hennessey.

James Tomkins – West Ham – CB/RB

With the release of Adrian Mariappa and Brede Hangeland this summer, it is extremely likely that Pardew will be looking to add some defenders to the squad as soon as possible.  James Tomkins is a versatile player who can play in the center of defence, but is also capable at right back.

Tomkins featured in the Great Britain Olympic team during London 2012 and has gained plenty of experience playing in the Premier League for West Ham.  Tomkins wouldn’t necessarily walk straight into the Palace starting eleven, but he would certainly offer some much needed competition and cover at the back.

Lewis Dunk – Brighton & Hove Albion – CB

Palace are rumoured to have made a £5m bid for the Brighton defender.  Dunk is a tall, strong and powerful center back and is considered by many to be the best at his position in the Championship.

Though he may be seen as a potential long term replacement for Damien Delaney, there remain question marks surrounding his temperament, so he would be viewed as a gamble, especially with Brighton apparently looking for a fee somewhere in the region of double Palace’s initial bid.

Andros Townsend – Newcastle United – Winger

Like Krul, Townsend is another player that Newcastle may want to remove from the wage bill as they look towards next season in the Championship.  Townsend is a direct and pacey winger, with an eye for goal.  Unlucky to not have made it into England’s Euro 2016 squad (especially considering the formation employed by Hodgson against Russia in Saturday’s opener), Townsend would be an excellent addition to Palace’s squad.

Palace rely heavily on quick, attacking wingers for their style of play and last season proved that Bacary Sako and Lee Chung-Yong were not at the level needed to provide real competition or cover to Yannick Bolasie or Wilfried Zaha.  Palace should do all they can to secure the signature of this exciting young England international.

Christian Benteke – Liverpool – Striker

Christian Benteke is a powerful centre forward, but also possesses a calmness in front of goal and great technical ability.  He moved from Belgian side Genk to Aston Villa in 2012 where he enjoyed an impressive 1:2 goals to games ratio.  Following three successful years at Villa, the Belgian international was transferred to Liverpool for a colossal £32.5m.

However, since joining Liverpool, Benteke has struggled to make a real impact, never truly seeing consistent game time and many arguing his style of play does not suit Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.  After an unsuccessful first season, Benteke will most likely be open to a move away from Anfield, but his high wages and desire to play in European competitions might prove too much of a stretch for Palace.

Other players linked to the club since the window opened less than two weeks ago include:

Davide Santon – RB/LB currently at Inter Milan

Jake Cooper – CB at Reading

Saido Berahino – STR at West Brom

Kouma Babacar – STR at Fiorentina (has been linked with Palace during every window since 2014)

Cedric Bakambu – Prolific goalscorer with Villareal

Dominic Iorfa – English CB at Wolves

Kortney Hause – English CB at Wolves

FA Cup - It wasn't to be...

Written by Patrick Stevens

It wasn't to be. But there was so much to be proud of, says Patrick Stevens

Wilf tears final

It was unable to sleep. It was waking first. It was 'this is the day'.

It was messages of good luck. It was friends long forgotten but who knew what this meant. It was all in this together.

It was choosing the shirt. It was walking through town. It was carrying the flag.  It was everyone looking.

It was the Greene Man. It was painted faces. It was singing. It was sunny (briefly). It was anticipation.  It was permutations.  It was belief (or was it hope?). It was jaegermeister.

It was Twitter. It was Facebook. It was fans everywhere connecting. It meeting up with friends old and new. It was not finding others.

It was walking up Wembley Way. It was photos. It was posing with your nearest and dearest. It was happening.

It was taking your seat. It was Wilf's out. It was Wilf's in. It was 'this is the time'.

It was the display. It was waving a blue flag. It was showing the world we are the best. It was 'this mentality is unstoppable'. It was special.

It was Abide with me. It was overwhelming. It was not seeing through the tears.

It was game on. It was holding on. It was growing in strength. It was Clattenburg (it's always Clattenburg). It was ridiculous.

It was singing. It was singing. It was singing. And It was singing. It was exhausting.

It was Punch. It was incredible. It was onside. It was chaos. It was carnage. It was amazing.  It was written.

It was gone too quick. It was inevitable. It was extra time.

It was ten men. It was tired legs. It was not our day. It was them again. (It's always them.)

It was staying and clapping. It was pride. It was singing even louder. It was Jedi's tears. It was extreme emotion. It was the stuff of legend.

It was over. It was time to go. It was so close. It was 'what if?'

But it was great. It was cheering a losing team not booing a winning manager. It was support come what may. It was together as one. It was the Palace spirt.

It was a day to learn. It was a day to grow. It was losers being winners, and winners being losers. It was a day to treat those two imposters the same.

It was a bitter pill. But It was a day we will never forget.

It was a time to remember those no longer with us.

It was a day by which others will remember us.

It was Palace.
