It wasn't to be. But there was so much to be proud of, says Patrick Stevens

Wilf tears final

It was unable to sleep. It was waking first. It was 'this is the day'.

It was messages of good luck. It was friends long forgotten but who knew what this meant. It was all in this together.

It was choosing the shirt. It was walking through town. It was carrying the flag.  It was everyone looking.

It was the Greene Man. It was painted faces. It was singing. It was sunny (briefly). It was anticipation.  It was permutations.  It was belief (or was it hope?). It was jaegermeister.

It was Twitter. It was Facebook. It was fans everywhere connecting. It meeting up with friends old and new. It was not finding others.

It was walking up Wembley Way. It was photos. It was posing with your nearest and dearest. It was happening.

It was taking your seat. It was Wilf's out. It was Wilf's in. It was 'this is the time'.

It was the display. It was waving a blue flag. It was showing the world we are the best. It was 'this mentality is unstoppable'. It was special.

It was Abide with me. It was overwhelming. It was not seeing through the tears.

It was game on. It was holding on. It was growing in strength. It was Clattenburg (it's always Clattenburg). It was ridiculous.

It was singing. It was singing. It was singing. And It was singing. It was exhausting.

It was Punch. It was incredible. It was onside. It was chaos. It was carnage. It was amazing.  It was written.

It was gone too quick. It was inevitable. It was extra time.

It was ten men. It was tired legs. It was not our day. It was them again. (It's always them.)

It was staying and clapping. It was pride. It was singing even louder. It was Jedi's tears. It was extreme emotion. It was the stuff of legend.

It was over. It was time to go. It was so close. It was 'what if?'

But it was great. It was cheering a losing team not booing a winning manager. It was support come what may. It was together as one. It was the Palace spirt.

It was a day to learn. It was a day to grow. It was losers being winners, and winners being losers. It was a day to treat those two imposters the same.

It was a bitter pill. But It was a day we will never forget.

It was a time to remember those no longer with us.

It was a day by which others will remember us.

It was Palace.
